WELCOME TO ATELIER A
ARTIST RESIDENCY & CREATIVE LABORATORY

IS A SHARED SPACE, A CREATIVE PLATFORM FROM WHERE IDEAS AND PROJECTS
CAN EVOLVE AND DEVELOP. IT IS A HUB OF INNOVATION AND CULTURE IN THE CENTRE OF APRICALE
AN ANCIENT AND MAGICAL VILLAGE WHICH STILL COEXISTS WITH THE SURROUNDING NATURE’S CYCLES.

ABOUT

  • About us
    IT’S A HOME

It’s an authentic and welcoming house-laboratory from where one can create, produce, exhibit and promote art and design; where courses, workshop, meetings, performances of music, theatre and dance are held; and which offers a living space, participating in the Residency Program, with six beds, a studio, a kitchen and a panoramic terrace.

  • About us
    IT’S AN ARTIST RESIDENCY

Atelier A provides a residency for artists, from all over Italy and abroad, that promotes this unique village as a place for reflection, research, production and sharing. In exchange for the hospitality provided by Atelier A, usually one or two weeks, the artists share their own artistic journey with the place and the community.

  • About us
    IT’S A REALITY

Managed by Roberta Agostini and Gabriele Rosso, Atelier A today is a multi-discipline creative workspace: a graphics studio, a visual communication studio and a craft workroom for art, sewing and scenography. We are also involved with editorial design, brand identity and social communication. We produce hand crafted objects, that span from sartorial work to use of recycled material and we organize workshops of paper mache and creative sowing.

The residencies at Atelier A are open all year round. We offer resident artists a place to live, the opportunity to create their own art, the chance to exhibit and sell within the venue of Atelier A and to exhibit in our biannual show held at the medieval Museum-Castle of Apricale.

Furthermore the residency is an amazing opportunity to enjoy the beauty and wildness characteristic of this area. The pieces exhibited at our biannual show will be catalogued digitally and will be accessible to artists and institutions alike in order to guarantee the visibility and traceability of the artist's own journey within the residency.

The residency includes accommodation in single or double rooms, electricity, water, gas and heating and the use of a number of common spaces and facilities: studio / work and exhibition spaces / kitchen / terrace / internet wireless connection / organic foods such as olive-oil, according to season / natural materials such as stone and wood which can be collected in the surrounding area / ceramics workshop in the centre of Apricale.

Atelier A, as an independent and autonomous entity, manages the programme of residencies with the philosophy and values of exchange.

Thus, we ask the artist to contribute with a piece of their work and with a minimum weekly contribution for the cost of their stay.

Those artists interested in participating in the residency can contact us via email or through our Facebook page sending us images of their work and/or their portfolio together with a brief artistic biography.

HISTORY & LOCATION

HISTORY OF ATELIER A
In 1997 Atelier A has its opening with an engraving exhibition of international importance; 12 engravings and 12 lithographies by Arman, followed by engravings by Alechinsky, Appel, Ben, Chagall, Chillida, Fautrier, Folon, Hartung, KiJno, Mc Lean, Mirò, Picasso, Tapiès, Tinguely and many more and with the drawings of Enzo Cini. Danièle Noel, engraver, together with Marco Cassini, also an engraver, bring to life the new

workshop with a period rich in events and meetings so much so that Atelier A becomes a reference point for many Italian and foreign artists. As a result of this artistic fervour, many artists are hosted at Atelier A and the ancient castle sees a series of highly relevant exhibitions by famous figures such as Folon, Wilhem Scholte, Sergio Bianco (who placed the famous bicycle on the bell tower which has become the symbol of Apricale),

Fiorato, Costantini, Mirò, Ben, Picasso, Braque, Luzzati, Edberg, Slotte, Verdet, Costantini, Cini, Baviera, Niki di Saint, Phalle, Didier Mahieu and many other emerging artists. After a decade of closure , the Atelier A reborn as Artistic Residence and multidisciplinary Creative Lab in 2012 , creating a new way of living , producing and sharing art.

APRICALE
Apricale is a medieval village in the Western Ligurian hinterland and is amongst the most characteristic villages of the area. At the centre of the village, in its ancient alleyways, Atelier A is immersed in the magical, medieval atmosphere of the place – outside only silence and the green woods, still wild and lush. Here nature rules.

The rhythms of the city are far away and living in harmony is something demanded by the inhabitants. The village is situated in a strategic position: one step away from Monte-Carlo and the beaches of the French Riviera, in the centre of the Nervia Valley surrounded by some other magnificent Medieval villages (Dolceacqua, Bajardo, Pigna..) and just half an hour from the sea and an hour from the snow of the pre-Alps. It is in the midst of vast forests with streams,

which in some cases, as in Rocchetta Nervina, form fairy-blue lakes where in summer, relaxation is a duty. The medieval town of Apricale (607 inhabitants), an altitude of 300m and just 13km from the sea is situated inland from Bordighera and Ventimiglia. Its fortunate position is the basis of the origin of its name, which derives from the Latin word “apricus”, open to the sun.

The main economic resources for Apricale are agriculture and tourism. Apricale produces an excellent extra virgin olive oil. The main feature is the spectacular aspect of the town, celebrated by poets and famous writers who have helped make Apricale a village frequented by artists who spent some periods of fruitful creativity here.

Since the early '60 the alleyways were painted with

many scenes of rural life. Also at that time, on the initiative of some young people in the village and with the help of Mario Agrifoglio, the first pottery workshop was created which, with its oven, became in the 70’s a proper Ceramics School frequented by schools and institutions from the whole valley.

In the 90’s began a fruitful collaboration with the Maeght Foundation in Saint Paul de Vence, which led to the preparation of numerous exhibitions with internationally renowned artists in the exhibition space of the village Castle. (www.apricale.org) .
